T-Bones Sneak by Wingnuts in Ninth
WICHITA, KS- The Wichita Wingnuts lost 5-4 to the Kansas City T-Bones at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium on Friday night.
Brandon Jones hit a solo home run leading off the top of the ninth inning to break a 4-4 tie. T-Bones' closer Jacob Wiley recorded the save in the bottom of the inning, retiring the Wingnuts in order.
Wichita had overcome a late, three-run deficit to tie the game. Down 4-1 in the seventh, Mike Conroy singled through the right side with one out. Two batters later, Jake Kahaulelio drove a double to left-center that scored Conroy and cut the T-Bones' lead to 4-2.
In the bottom of the eigth, Juan Richardson led off with a single to left against right-hander Lucas Irvine. C.J. Ziegler followed with a monstrous, two-run home run to left-center that tied the score.
Matt Nevarez took the loss in relief, allowing one earned run in one inning. Nevarez struck out the side in the ninth following the Jones' home run.
Steve Kent earned the win in relief for Kansas City, retiring all three batters to face him in the bottom of the eighth.
Reid Fronk opened the scoring against Wingnuts' starter Ben Graham with a solo home run to center field in the top of the third. Gus Milner added a solo shot to left with two outs in the fourth.
Conroy lined a home run to right-center in the bottom of the fifth to cut the lead in half.
Kansas City added a single run in the sixth on a two-out, RBI single from Devin Goodwin. A wild pitch thrown by Nick Walters in the seventh gave the T-Bones a 4-1 lead.
Graham took a no-decision, allowing three earned runs on two hits in five and two-thirds innings. Graham walked two and struck out one.
Kansas City starter Nick Singleton also took a no-decision, allowing two earned runs on nine hits in six and two-thirds. Singleton walked none and struck out three.
