LAREDO, TX- The Wichita Wingnuts (39-29) beat the Laredo Lemurs (31-35) 8-3 at Uni-Trade Stadium on Sunday night.
Derek Blacksher held down the Lemurs' offense with eight-plus strong innings, while the Wingnuts used a sustained attack on offense that produced runs in five different frames.
Khoury lined a single to center field leading off the game and moved to second when Wilberto Ortiz walked. Two batters later, Mark Wagner pulled a double down the left field line to score Khoury and Ortiz with the game's first runs.
Laredo put runners on the corners with one out in the bottom of the second, but Blacksher limited the Lemurs to just one run on a Stephen Douglas sacrifice fly to right field.
Wagner made it 3-1 Wingnuts in the top of the third, fighting off an 0-2 pitch to right field that scored Khoury from second.
Khoury drew a leadoff walk in the fifth, stole second, and scored two batters later on a John Rodriguez RBI single to center field. Rodriguez took second on a hit-and-run single to right by David Peralta. Jessie Mier made it 5-2 in favor of Wichita with a groundball single through the right side.
Douglas doubled home Uriak Marquez from first base with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but Blacksher retired the next eight batters in a row to work into the ninth inning for the first time this season.
Jared McDonald plated Rodriguez with a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh to make it 6-2. In the top of the eighth, Wagner drew a bases loaded walk, while Peralta added a sacrifice fly to right to extend the Wingnuts' lead to 8-2.
Philip Incaviglia walked to lead off the ninth against Blacksher who was then relieved by Edgar Martinez. Incaviglia took second on defensive indifference, third on Tucker's flyball to center, and scored on a sacrifice fly to left by Steve Pearson. After Palmer Karr Jr. doubled down the left field line, Martinez struck out Anthony Scelfo to end the game.
Blacksher scattered just five hits, walked three, and struck out one. Blacksher recorded 14 of his 24 outs on groundballs.
Khoury had two hits, two walks, four runs scored, and tied a Wingnuts' single-game record with four stolen bases. Wagner finished the night with four RBI. Wichita drew eight walks in the win, five of which came around to score.
Matthew Way started for Laredo and took the loss, allowing seven earned runs on nine hits in seven and one-third innings. Way walked six and struck out five.
The Wingnuts continue their 15-game road trip on Monday night at Amarillo. First pitch at Amarillo National Bank Sox Stadium is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. Ryan Hinson will be on the mound for the Wingnuts. Amarillo goes with left-hander Chuck Lofren.
