SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Wichita Wingnuts defeated the Sioux Falls Canaries 11-8 at Sioux Falls Stadium on Friday night.
For the second straight game, every Wingnuts starter collected at least one base hit, while Greg Porter drove in four runs for a second consecutive game.
The Wingnuts manufactured a run in the top of the first. After reaching on an infield single, Josh Horn advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches from Sioux Falls' Starter Travis Kane. Greg Porter drove in Horn with an RBI groundout to second base.
The Wingnuts executed again in the second. Kelly Hunt doubled to right-center to lead off the inning. Steve Pearson sacrificed him to third before Joe Muich singled to left field to give Wichita a 2-0 lead.
The Wingnuts took a commanding lead in the fourth. With two on and one out, Michael Thompson singled to center field to plate Steve Pearson for a 3-0 lead. Later in the inning, Josh Horn singled home a run with two outs. Greg Porter capped off the frame with a two-out, three-run double that put the Wingnuts in front 7-0.
Starting in place of Brad Davis, Gabe Medina went 5.2 innings. The Canaries rallied for six runs in the bottom of the fourth to get within one run, but Medina got out of further trouble to earn the win.
Michael Thompson doubled home a run in the top of the fourth to re-extend the Wingnuts' lead to 8-6. In the top of the fifth, Dustan Mohr doubled to right-center field to make it 10-6.
An error by second baseman Joe Anthonsen in the eighth inning led to the Wingnuts' 11th run. Cody Haerther singled home two in the bottom half against Richard Salazar, but Salazar came back to get Cory Harris to hit into an inning ending double play as the tying run at the plate.
Joe Muich finished the night with three hits, while Nick Blasi scored three runs. Porter went 1 for 3 with four RBIs and has now hit safely in 10 games in a row. Justin Young worked 1.1 innings of scoreless relief while Joe D'Alessandro pitched a scoreless ninth to earn his sixth Wingnuts save.
