WICHITA, Kans. (March 8, 2017) – The Wichita Wingnuts signed veteran right-hander Danny Gutierrez Wednesday, the second pitcher to sign for the 2017 campaign.
A veteran who has previously pitched in the American Association for Fargo-Moorhead, Grand Prairie and St. Paul, Gutierrez joins the Wingnuts after pitching in Mexico in 2016. Gutierrez made 22 starts between Laguna and Yucatan last season, going 6-5 with a 3.61 ERA in 114.2 innings.
Originally drafted out of high school by the Kansas City Royals in the 33rd round of the 2005 draft, Gutierrez elected to play one year at Riverside Community College (CA) before signing with the Royals in 2006. Gutierrez got as far as High-A Wilmington in the Kansas City organization before he was traded to the Texas Rangers in 2009.
The right-hander was assigned to Double-A Frisco upon his arrival to the Texas organization, where he finished out the 2009 season. In 2010, Gutierrez appeared at three different levels of the Rangers organization and pitched in the Arizona Fall League for the second straight year, but 2010 was his last in affiliated baseball.
After not pitching in 2011, Gutierrez made four starts with the St. Paul Saints in 2012, then joined the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks for the 2013 season. Gutierrez began 2014 with the RedHawks as well, but was released before signing with the Grand Prairie AirHogs for the remainder of the season. The native Californian started 2015 with Grand Prairie before leaving to head to Mexico for the first time.
Gutierrez made nine starts for Laguna before making a one-start cameo for St. Paul near the end of the 2015 campaign. In his four previous seasons in the American Association, Gutierrez has a combined 5-14 record and a 4.15 ERA across 49 appearances, 31 starts, covering 204.0 innings.
Gutierrez is the third player to sign with the Wingnuts for the upcoming season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which opens on May 6.
