Wingnuts Acquire, Sign former Shocker Cooper

WICHITA, Kans. (February 28, 2017) – The Wichita Wingnuts acquired and signed former Wichita State Shocker right-hander Jordan Cooper on Tuesday, giving the club the first member of their 2017 pitching staff.

The Wingnuts acquired Cooper from the Kansas City T-Bones in exchange for a player to be named later and future considerations. Cooper signed with Kansas City in May of last year after his release from the Cleveland Indians organization. In 19 starts for the T-Bones, the righty was 3-6 with a 4.58 ERA. Of his 19 starts in 2016, 10 of them were quality starts, including five straight from July 5 to July 30.

Born in Topeka, Cooper was first drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 17th round of the 2008 draft out of Shawnee Heights High School in Tecumseh, Kans. Rather than sign, Cooper decided to pitch collegiately at Wichita State.

After winning eight games and posting a 2.78 ERA in 97.0 innings as a freshman with the Shockers, the right-hander was even stronger as a sophomore. Cooper won 10 of his 15 starts, tossed five complete games, owned a 2.01 ERA in 107.1 innings of work, and was named the Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Year.

Following that stellar sophomore season at WSU, Cooper was drafted again, this time in the ninth round by the Cleveland Indians. Cooper elected to sign, and spent the summer of 2010 in the Short-Season New York/Penn League with Mahoning Valley. The 6’2” right-hander made his full-season minor league debut with Class-A Lake County in 2011, and after splitting 2012 between Lake County and High-A Carolina, he reached Double-A Akron for the first time in 2013.

The 27-year old spent the next three seasons splitting time between Akron and Triple-A Columbus. In his seven total seasons in the Cleveland organization, Cooper made 157 appearances, 74 of which were starts, and had a 4.18 ERA in 555.0 career innings.

Cooper is the second player to sign with the Wingnuts for the upcoming season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which opens on May 6.
