WICHITA, Kans. (March 10, 2017) – The Wichita Wingnuts added a new right-hander to their staff Friday, signing 25-year old right-hander James Campbell.
A former 12th round pick of the Los Angeles Dodgers out of Stony Brook in 2012, Campbell spent four season in the Dodgers system, climbing as high as High-A Rancho Cucamonga in 2013 and 2015.
Campbell began his professional career with rookie-level Ogden during the summer of 2012, making three appearances before he was promoted to the Class-A Great Lakes Loons. The righty made stops with Great Lakes in each of his four seasons in the Los Angeles organization, making 36 of his 63 appearances for the Loons.
After appearing at three different levels of the Dodgers system in 2013, Campbell went to Australia for the winter to pitch for the Australian Baseball League’s Adelaide Bite. Campbell made 14 appearances, including seven starts, for the Bite that winter, and turned in a 1-2 record with a 3.95 ERA across 41.0 innings of work.
The 6’1” righty returned to the Dodgers after his Australian stint for the start of the 2014 season, a year which saw him limited to just four outings due to injury. Campbell stopped at three levels of the Los Angeles system in 2015, his last with the club. In his four seasons in the minors with the Dodgers, Campbell was 2-14 with a 5.38 ERA in 117.0 innings.
Campbell did not pitch professionally in 2016, deciding instead to retire prior to the season. His signing with the Wingnuts marks his return to the professional stage.
Elsewhere on the transaction wire, RHP Gage Smith has cleared waivers, making him a free agent.
Campbell is the fourth player to sign with the Wingnuts for the upcoming season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which opens on May 6.
