Early Offense Boosts Boshers as Wingnuts Roll

WICHITA, Kans. (July 15, 2017) – The Wichita Wingnuts got four runs in the first and added on late to support seven sterling innings from Alex Boshers, downing the Sioux Falls Canaries 9-4 on Saturday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

Wichita (38-16) wasted no time getting going against Sioux Falls starter Troy Marks (3-5), stringing together a walk and three straight singles in the bottom of the first. Brent Clevlen ripped an RBI single to open the scoring, then a Matt Chavez fielder’s choice grounder plated another before an error by the Canaries (25-29) made it 3-0. Martin Medina’s sacrifice fly capped off the inning.

Burt Reynolds lifted a two-run homer in the top of the fourth to cut the Wingnuts lead in half, but Boshers (8-2) was dominant before and after the big fly. The righty retired nine of the last ten hitters to face him, striking out four without issuing a walk to pick up the victory.

Leo Vargas brought home a run in the bottom of the sixth by looping a two-out RBI single, then Clevlen tacked on insurance in the seventh with a long solo homer for a 6-2 Wichita lead.

After Sioux Falls rallied for a pair of runs in the top of the eighth off Chad Nading, the Wingnuts put the game out of reach with three tallies of their own in the bottom half of the frame. Richard Prigatano cracked an RBI double, Brennen Salgado delivered an RBI single, and Harrison Kain wrapped up the scoring with a sacrifice fly.

The Wingnuts will conclude their series with the Canaries on Sunday afternoon at 1:05. Wichita will send Eddie Medina (6-2, 3.26) to the bump to be opposed by right-hander Miles Nordgren (2-3, 5.75). All the action will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM, and at americanassociationbaseball.tv.
