WICHITA, Kan. (July 10, 2018) – A career-high 7.2 innings from Tyler Kane and 15 hits from the Wichita offense helped the Wingnuts to an 8-3 win over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Tuesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
With the Wingnuts bullpen taxed after the 12-inning game on Monday night, Kane (2-1) delivered his longest outing as a professional, working into the eighth inning on 113 pitches. The right-hander allowed eight hits and two runs, both earned, while striking out two RedHawks.
Wichita (30-19) fell into an early hole for the second straight night, as Fargo-Moorhead plated a run in the first on an RBI groundout from Brennan Metzger. The Wingnuts struck back with three runs in the bottom of the second against RedHawks starter Trey McNutt (2-5), starting with a solo home run off the bat of Tony Thomas. It marked the third consecutive game with a round-tripper for Thomas, who stands all alone atop the American Association leaderboards with 13 homers on the season. Nick Rotola put the Wingnuts in front with a sacrifice fly, then Logan Watkins added to the lead with an RBI single that made it 3-1.
After Devan Ahart trimmed the lead to 3-2 on a solo homer, Wichita posted two more runs in the fourth on Rotola’s run-scoring single and an RBI groundout from Watkins that pushed the advantage to 5-2. The Wingnuts put the game away with three more tallies in the fifth, two coming courtesy of a double from Ryne Willard and the capper on an RBI single from Leo Vargas.
Fargo-Moorhead (26-23) notched the game’s final run on a solo home run from Chris Jacobs, before Austin Boyle slammed the door in the ninth for the victory.
The Wingnuts and RedHawks conclude their series on Wednesday afternoon, with Travis Banwart (4-2, 2.40) going up against lefty Sebastian Kessay (3-2, 2.10). First pitch is scheduled for 11:05 AM, and will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM KGSO, TuneIn and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
