Nine-Run Second Sinks Wingnuts in Game Five

WINNIPEG, Manitoba (September 20, 2017) – The Winnipeg Goldeyes scored nine in the second and never looked back as they knocked off the Wichita Wingnuts 18-2 Wednesday night at Shaw Park to claim their second straight American Association Championship.

Mason Katz got the Winnipeg offense started in the second, doubling off of Tim Brown (0-1) to bring home the contest’s first two runs. Andrew Sohn and David Rohm added RBI singles to chase Brown, and Reggie Abercrombie then added two more with a single of his own. Shawn Pleffner, who had led off with a single, finished the inning he started with a three-run homer, making it 9-0.

Winnipeg added five more in the fourth, including Pleffner driving in two more with a double and David Bergin blasting a two-run shot. Another run in the sixth put Winnipeg up 15-0.

Goldeyes starter Edwin Carl (2-0) stymied the Wingnuts through six innings, yielding just five base runners, two of which were erased on double plays. Wichita finally got to Carl and chased him in the seventh, with back-to-back singles followed by a Richard Prigatano double getting the visitors on the board. Matt Chavez then raced home on a wild pitch for the second run of the frame.

The Winnipeg offense was still not done, scoring three more times in the eighth. Pleffner started the inning with a triple to complete the cycle, and scored on a Wes Darvill single. Katz then capped the evening’s scoring with a two-run homer.

The win for the Goldeyes secures their second straight American Association Championship, making them the first repeat champions in the league since the Fort Worth Cats in 2006 and 2007.

The Wichita Wingnuts organization thanks all their fans for a great 10th anniversary season in 2017, which saw the club win it’s seventh consecutive division title and make the American Association Championship Series for the fifth time in six years! We wish all our fans a safe and happy offseason, and look forward to seeing you all at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium for the 11th season of Wingnuts baseball beginning in May 2018!
