WICHITA, Kans. (June 16, 2017) – The Wichita Wingnuts piled up ten runs in the first three innings and cruised to a 12-4 victory over the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks on Friday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
It didn’t take long for the Wingnuts (18-9) to get the bats going against RedHawks starter Mike O’Neal (2-3), as Brent Clevlen drilled a two-run homer over the wall in left for a 2-0 lead after one.
It was Leo Vargas who got the scoring underway in the second, slicing an RBI double to make it 3-0, before a sacrifice fly and wild pitch added two more in the frame. The Wingnuts blew the game open in the third, piling up five runs courtesy of a Harrison Kain two-run double, RBI singles from TJ Mittelstaedt and Matt Chavez, and a Clevlen sacrifice fly to make it 10-0 Wichita.
That would be more than enough support for Wichita starter Ryan Kussmaul (3-2), who delivered his best start of 2017 with six shutout frames. The righty allowed just three hits and punched out a season-high seven to pick up the victory.
Mittelstaedt and Chavez were responsible for tacking on two more insurance runs in the fifth, with Mittelstaedt plating a run on a groundout and Chavez grounding a run-scoring single to increase the advantage to 12-0.
Fargo-Moorhead (15-14) got on the board in the seventh via Kes Carter’s two-run homer, and then added a pair in the eighth on a two-RBI single from K.D. Kang. Garrett Gould finished off the win with a scoreless ninth.
The Wingnuts and RedHawks will continue their series tomorrow night at 7:05, as Charlie Leesman (1-0, 0.00) makes his return to the mound against fellow lefty Will Solomon (1-0, 3.56). All the action will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM, and at americanassociationbaseball.tv.
