Six-Run Eighth Lifts Wichita Over Canaries

WICHITA, Kans. (July 14, 2017) – The Wichita Wingnuts scored six runs in the bottom of the eighth inning to rally back and claim the opener of their three-game series against the Sioux Falls Canaries Friday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.

After throwing a scoreless seventh, Canaries All-Star righty Dylan Thompson (2-2) returned to the hill for Sioux Falls (25-28) in the eighth. Down 10-7, the Wingnuts (37-16) coaxed a lead off walk and then three straight singles, with knocks by Zac Fisher and Christian Stringer bringing Wichita to within one. Brent Clevlen then put the Wingnuts in front, belting a two-run double to deep left-center. Two outs later, Martin Medina capped the frame with a two-run homer to push the lead to 13-10.

Seth Harvey came on for the ninth and retired the Canaries in order, sealing his 11th save of the season and Wichita’s fifth last at-bat win of the year.

Sioux Falls jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the first inning and a half, but thanks to some sloppy defense, the Wingnuts plated four unearned runs across the second and third innings to take the lead.

The two teams traded tallies in the fourth, with a two-out single by Harrison Kain putting Wichita on top again.

The Canaries then scored four in the fifth to retake the lead at 8-5. Two-out run-scoring doubles by Medina and Stringer in the fifth and sixth innings, respectively brought Wichita to within one, but Sioux Falls got two more in the eighth off of James Campbell (2-1), including Jabari Henry’s second homer of the night, to extend the lead to three again. The Wingnuts offense then rallied for Wichita’s 21st home win of the season.

The Wingnuts and Canaries continue their three-game series Saturday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium. Right-hander Alex Boshers (7-2, 4.01) will take the mound for Wichita, while Sioux Falls will counter with fellow righty Troy Marks (3-4, 4.31).
