Veteran Kussmaul Returns to Wichita

WICHITA, Kans. (March 14, 2017) – The Wichita Wingnuts signed veteran Ryan Kussmaul Tuesday, bringing back a right-hander who made three starts for them in 2016 before having his contract purchased by the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Signed on June 16 of last year, Kussmaul posted a 1.62 ERA in 16.2 innings with Wichita, and did not allow an earned run until his final start with the club. The righty’s second start was his best for the Wingnuts, as he held Laredo scoreless on one hit over seven innings while striking out six.

After his third start, Kussmaul had his contract purchased by the Diamondbacks, who assigned him to Double-A Mobile. Kussmaul made three starts for the BayBears before spending the rest of the season on the disabled list. The 30-year old then made a couple of appearances in both the Dominican and Venezuelan Winter Leagues, marking the sixth consecutive year he has pitched in one or more foreign winter leagues.

Kussmaul was drafted in the 42nd round of the 2006 draft by the Florida Marlins, but elected to attend college rather than sign. After pitching at three different schools, Kussmaul began his professional career with the Frontier League’s Southern Illinois Miners in 2009.

The following year, Kussmaul was signed by the Chicago White Sox. The right-hander spent five seasons in the White Sox organization, climbing as high as Triple-A Charlotte. Following his time in the Chicago system, Kussmaul spent a year with the Atlantic League’s Long Island Ducks, collecting 26 saves as the club’s closer in 2015. In eight professional seasons, Kussmaul is 26-12 with 57 saves and a 2.80 ERA in 414.1 career innings.

Kussmaul is the fifth player to sign with the Wingnuts for the upcoming season. American Association clubs may carry up to 28 players during spring training, which opens on May 6.
